GARFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ADDITION
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

Photograph by Dan Wayne

A two-story addition to the existing 1920's building was designed to accommodate a Learning Resource Center, administrative spaces and additional classrooms.  The addition was designed to blend with the early 1900's neighborhood, create a strong entrance and provide a fun place for children to learn.  An enclosed courtyard gave kindergarten students direct access from classrooms.  Brick was selected to match the existing building, and to create a focal point at the entry, extensive glazing was incorporated.  An animated interior was achieved through the use of primary colors.  Due to the design and manner in which the construction phase was handled, FAI received the WBE Consultant of the Year Award and was awarded additional projects with the Kansas City Missouri School District.  Frewen Architects, Inc. has now completed the renovation of over 40 schools for the district.
